This has always been a very interesting aspect of design to AYD as a performance boat design company – an area of boating that does allow development of so many aspects of design and many of which apply to other areas of our work and stimulate more ideas and concepts.

We have developed many aspects of step design, spray rail development, split deadrise hull forms and hydrodynamic design through our race craft with success in terms of results and importantly in improving our services to our clients in all areas of our design work. We have also used competition craft to test structures and materials, fittings and mechanical systems, crew comfort and aerodynamics. Race craft design and development has covered monohull and multihull, RIBs, one-offs and production.

Work continues in above areas of research and also sees new areas of development for the future being investigated such as moveable surfaces, foils, alternative power sources, and bow tabs – so many exciting areas to work on.

AYD apart from designing for the raceboat markets has also built and raced their own craft. A real show of not just our commitment – but also the fact that we are very much a 'hands-on’ design office – one that does understand building, rigging and the setting up of performance craft. This experience and wide range of data gained allows us to work with and advise our clients on the actual operation of their craft and help maximise any project and campaign.

Adam has also raced extensively and has been a British and European Champion
